How to make a homemade lava lamp using very simple ingredients! This is a fun, cheap, and easy science project for kids that will teach them about density. You can use things that you already have in your house. All you need is any empty plastic bottle with a lid, food colouring, vegetable oil, and effervescent tablets. Optional – add some glitter or sequins to make your lava lamp even more magical!
INGREDIENTS YOU NEED
Clear Plastic Bottle with Cap or Lid
Effervescent Tablet (like Berocca, Alka-Seltzer, etc)
Optional: glitter or sequins
WHAT TO DO
Fill the bottle three quarters of the way with vegetable oil.
Fill the rest of the bottle with water, but not to the top (leave a quarter of the bottle empty).
Close the lid tightly.
Wait for the layers of oil and water to separate and settle.
Put in a few drops of food colouring.
Break the effervescent tablet into smaller pieces.
Drop pieces of the tablet (one at a time) into the bottle to create a bubbly fizzy lava lamp.
Add glitter or sequins to make your lava lamp even more magical!
